DIY personal care

So it’s that time for me…the time when I  I attempt to get ready for the “big day.” The big day being the day when I get to see this guy again (the grown up one, haha):

frugal living 034

My husband will be returning from his shorty-short deployment  pretty soon (aka he was gone for a month and some change to upgrade his flying skills).

I tried this homemade facial for the first time, and I think it’s my new fav!

Honey-cinnamon-nutmeg facial

  • 2 tbs of honey (the recipe recommended raw honey but I used creamed honey and it came out just fine).
  • 2 tsp of nutmeg
  • 2 tsp of cinnamon
  • Mix into a paste. Leave on your face for 30 minutes, and remove with some warm water using soft, circular motions.

I scoured the net for some new natural recipes, and this one made sense for my skin-type, and was convenient to make (who doesn’t have those ingredients at home?). This particular facial calms redness, moisturizes, and is full of antioxidants from the cinnamon and nutmeg. My favorite part was how nicely the cinnamon and nutmeg worked to exfoliate and make my skin feel so soft and smooth.

Doing “pampering” things like this is relaxing at the end of a long day (and deployment days can be long). You know, it’s great to do a facial once a month if you have fairly normal skin…it sets the skin up nicely to fully absorb any moisturizering lotions you apply and helps keep your skin looking soft and smooth. Good enough motivation for me!

So just for the record, when I did apply this recipe to my face, I think I put way too much on! It totally slopped down my face and got on my clothing. I will plan on using only as much as I need next time. Somehow I thought I needed to apply all of it, but it’s not like honey mixed with nutmeg and cinnamon is going to go bad anytime soon. I feel like that’s probably a no-brainer for most people, but  I didn’t catch that, so FYI, just in case you wonder when trying this recipe.

I hope you enjoy!

Amanda.

Welcome to day 26 of no more procrastinating (the important, non-urgent things in life): homemade deodorant. Click HERE for the beginning.

So the first time I came across this recipe I was at a friend’s house who was hosting a girls night. In between nursing my newborn and watching the demonstration, all I really wanted to know was does it work?  Don’t get me wrong, I thought it was awesome that it doesn’t have toxins in it like antiperspirants, and actually allows your body to rid itself of toxins by sweating, and you can say goodbye to those nasty yellow stains in your white tops that antiperspirants are infamous for leaving. But at the end of the day, if it was going to leave me smelling dingy, it wasnt going to fly with me…no matter how healthy.

As it turns out it works better than any store-bought option! And believe me, I’ve tried them all! My military-blunt husband can attest that they work. He wouldn’t lie.

It only takes about 5 minutes to make, and saves money to boot. That being said, I’ve been meaning to make some for a while now, but had been procrastinating, so here’s to not procrastinating an important part of life, my well-being and ahem hygiene (don’t worry, I wasnt walking around deordorantless, just running low).

Here’s how:

I got my recipe from HERE.

Gather your supplies, you’ll need: Cornstarch or Arrowroot powder, baking soda (preferably an unopened box), coconut oil, and your choice of essential oil (optional). An easy way to remember this recipe is you use 2tbs for everything, except the essential oils (7-10 drops should work…I used lavender). You can use any empty container you like, but I used an old deodorant container, by emptying it out, and filling it with my batch.

Mix, and stir all the ingredients until you make a paste:

And then place into whatever container you choose. I usually have a little extra that wont fit into the old deodorant container, so I just place it in tupperware container. I will say, coconut oil will turn into a liquid if your house is warmer than 75, so it will melt. If that’s the case you can store yours in the fridge. Apparently we keep a cold house, so  I can keep mine out with no melting issues.

This is the second batch I made, and it lasted about 2 months the first time. If you’re like me, and don’t know where you would buy arrow root powder, essential oils, and cocnut oil(right beside the oils), I found all of them on amazon (my go-to place for everything!), but apparently you can find coconut oil at just about every grocery store, and you should be able to find arrow root and essential oils in the health food section of most grocery stores.

Hope that helps!

Homecoming outfit: Inspiration Board (using Polyvore.com)

summer-fall outfit

Welcome to Day 14 of no more procrastinating (the important, non-urgent things in life). Click HERE for the beginning.

Yesterday I went over the “big-day” essentials in preparation for homecoming- but it could apply to any other event that you’d like to look your best. Today I’m going to reveal a longer plan that you’d want to start a month before the big-day. I found this plan in one of Instyle’s beauty specials, only it revealed the “tricks” celebrities use in preparation for the Oscars and so on. As silly as it may or may not sound, it actually really did help me look and feel my best the two times I tried it.

To me, it’s always been a fun way to count down the days until homecoming, and a its a great way to schedule in some much needed mommy-time. I think most mom’s know how easy it can be to forget to do that.

So if you have a special event you’re planning on going to, or you just want to look your best for your vacation, or just “because,” here’s a great plan that really targets all the categories, and will have you truly  looking your best. This works best if you schedule them in your calendar… writing things down make things happen.

The Plan:

  1. Moisturize hands and feet every night before bed with lotion, or Vaseline (my favorite), and apply nail oil (great for dry, brittle nails). Hands and feet deserve love too.
  2. Shop makeup. Pick a new lip color you want to rock. Try it well in advance to make sure it works for you and you feel comfortable in it. Lip color is as important as a killer set of shoes.
  3. Book your hair appointment: 2 weeks before is considered the optimum amount of time for your hair cut and color to settle into its ideal shade, shape and length.
  4. Try on your outfit at least a couple of weeks before the big day. Include your hairstyle, and makeup look, to ensure sure it works. Ask yourself whether you should wear your hair down or up, ponytail, or bun, etc.
  5. Pop your vitamins. Think omega-3 fatty acids…so important for shiny hair.
  6. Try a homemade facial about mid-month. I used 2 tbs of honey, two egg yolks, and one SMALL drop of milk (think REALLY small…it needs to be thick). I left it on for 10 minutes, and It made my face super soft and really helped to shrink my pores even though I only used it once! Love it!
  7. Next, try a homemade hair mask. (I use two eggs, one capful of olive oil, and whisk thoroughly. I wrap with a shower cap, or plastic bag and elastic, and wrap with a towel. Leave in for 30 min-2 hours, and wash thoroughly).
  8. Try a self-tanner lotion about 7 days before, until you’ve reached your desired “tan.”
  9. Try a “hand spa.” Soak your hands in some warm water and a drop or two of your favorite essential oil for 5 minutes, then use an exfoliate cloth, or solution (like sugar and water) to scrub your hands. Finish with some hand lotion, or Vaseline, and wear some cotton gloves overnight. Makes your hands crazy soft.
  10. For 7 days before the big day, use a no-hot tools policy, where for seven days you spare your hair the iron. This ensures shiny, shiny hair. On the day of, blow dry your hair on highest heat to ensure the most shine. For me this meant buns, and updos!
  11. Do your eyebrows 10 days before.
  12. Try an under eye serum a few days before if you don’t already.
  13. On the big day: walk/run in the a.m. for at least 45 min to increase blood flow to your cheeks. Don’t forget your manicure and pedicure.

Do your hair and makeup a couple of hours before the event. Try sliding an ice-cube over your pores to shrink them right before makeup application, and don’t forget to moisturize before you apply your foundation. This is the one day I like to use a primer to really look pulled together.Double check your makeup application in the sunlight to ensure everything looks fine. Smile and knock em’ dead.

Do you have any beauty prep rituals?

Amanda

Last night was homecoming for our family! For my non-military friends, homecoming is when your Marine (in my case) comes back from a mission/deployment, after being apart from us for several months.

In honor of my 31 day challenge of no more procrastinating (the important, non-urgent things in life), I want to share some fool-proof beauty prep practices for the “big-day” that I’ve always used as part of my countdown. Here’s to day.13 of no more procrastinating! Click HERE for the beginning.

Here’s a few of the essential beauty-prep items I think every women deserves to know about:

Pinned Image

Jergens is my favorite tanning lotion, and has even fooled my skeptical husband. A nail oil is crucial if you use your hands a lot like me. Revlon is a great lipstick resource on the cheap, and Vaseline works wonders especially when your finish by wearing cotton gloves for the night.

The Details

I start by moisterizing my hands (and feet if it’s the summer) everyday with vaseline, and then I apply a nail oil to my nails. When I’m feeling even more ambitious, I use cotton gloves on my hands after I apply the Vaseline, and I wake up with baby-smooth hands.  I honestly don’t really like wearing gloves to bed, but even if I just leave them on for a little bit, it makes a huge difference!

I pick out a lip color either from the store, or my collection, and wear it a few weeks before to make sure it works. A nice lip color is an easy way to make a look shine, and I think its just as important as a great pair of shoes.

When we get to about a week before the big day I try my hand at a self-tanner:  I apply before bed until I’ve reached my desired “tan.”  (Exfoliate and shave for best results, and apply lightly from the neck down with a closed hand. Refrain from applying it to your face. Buff knees, collar-bone, elbows, ankles, and wrist after  each application with a damp cloth to prevent demarcations. Wear loose clothing once skin has dried thoroughly to prevent the lotion from bleeding into your clothes. Use an exfoliatant (sugar works great), to wash your hands so you don’t stain your cuticle. Use a tinted moisturizer and bronzer on your face to achieve a glow.) Husband never even notices I used a self-tanner…its that good!

And yes, I made sure my husband got rid of the deployment-stache/ creature he grew during the months away from us. Sigh, but I love him!

Do you have any beauty-prep rules to follow? Essential products?

Hope that helps,

Amanda.
