Planning your wardrobe

I should probably preface this post with the fact that I’m not a fashion expert, but definitely a lover of it.

I want to talk about layers, because I have learned over the past year or so how quickly it can enlarge your wardrobe without buying a whole lot of extra clothing.

With each new layer, a new outfit is birthed (if you will), and the rule of multiplication is in play as you add a new layer. Even though one outfit might look similar, or hardly different than another, I still count an outfit with a different accessory, or different item as a new outfit.

A case in point (my very unedited process of getting dressed in the morning):

layers2

Each picture in my eyes is a different outfit, but with a small change. Obviously I wouldn’t wear those items 6 days in a row, or even a day after, but the point is the possibility is there for all the pieces in my wardrobe.

You see what I mean?

I think with a little creativity, you can find many more outfits in your wardrobe than you might have thought possible.  At least that’s been my experience.

I can stretch my wardrobe and each item much more than I used to since venturing out and layering in a creative way. It saves money and makes you look stylish. Layers add depth and warmth…I just can’t say enough about my love for layers.

I think it helps to start off with a rock solid wardrobe stocked with pieces you love and feel great in, and somewhat coordinate together. It also helps if they fit your needs. Fall/spring cleaning and organizing your wardrobe is a good place to start if you haven’t already. Less is more.

Case in point, I always like to have a few go-to shoes that I can comfortably wear as a SAHM, and they go with almost any outfit.

The only pair that’s missing from this picture are my riding boots, but I think you get the idea. Wedges, sneakers, flats, and boots are all fairly stylish, and comfy.

Happy Friday!

Living Frugal

I like to be somewhat analytical towards purchasing new items for my wardrobe. I find it saves time, and money in the long term. Both important elements in life. I tried to think of just four items I’d like to add to my wardrobe for this fall, and these are the four I came up with:

4 things for fall
Less is always more. Mid-weight jackets are still useful in late fall, and start going on sale right about now. Ankle books are comfortable and more sophisticated than flats. Of course you can never go wrong with replenishing the long sleeve shirt staple, and of course who doesn’t love the boot socks for your riding boots?
I like the idea of limiting you items to a few key pieces, and planning them out before you head out the door and go shopping (or click the mouse online, whichever you prefer). This easy planning ahead method isn’t foolproof, but is definitely more thoughtful and has always made the most of my money and wardrobe.
So here’s to day 24 of no more procrastinating the important (non-urgent things in life): your wardrobe. Click HERE for the beginning, just in case it’s your first day stopping in.
What four items would you come up with if limited to only four items?

Welcome to Day 14 of no more procrastinating (the important, non-urgent things in life). Click HERE for the beginning.

Yesterday I went over the “big-day” essentials in preparation for homecoming- but it could apply to any other event that you’d like to look your best. Today I’m going to reveal a longer plan that you’d want to start a month before the big-day. I found this plan in one of Instyle’s beauty specials, only it revealed the “tricks” celebrities use in preparation for the Oscars and so on. As silly as it may or may not sound, it actually really did help me look and feel my best the two times I tried it.

To me, it’s always been a fun way to count down the days until homecoming, and a its a great way to schedule in some much needed mommy-time. I think most mom’s know how easy it can be to forget to do that.

So if you have a special event you’re planning on going to, or you just want to look your best for your vacation, or just “because,” here’s a great plan that really targets all the categories, and will have you truly  looking your best. This works best if you schedule them in your calendar… writing things down make things happen.

The Plan:

  1. Moisturize hands and feet every night before bed with lotion, or Vaseline (my favorite), and apply nail oil (great for dry, brittle nails). Hands and feet deserve love too.
  2. Shop makeup. Pick a new lip color you want to rock. Try it well in advance to make sure it works for you and you feel comfortable in it. Lip color is as important as a killer set of shoes.
  3. Book your hair appointment: 2 weeks before is considered the optimum amount of time for your hair cut and color to settle into its ideal shade, shape and length.
  4. Try on your outfit at least a couple of weeks before the big day. Include your hairstyle, and makeup look, to ensure sure it works. Ask yourself whether you should wear your hair down or up, ponytail, or bun, etc.
  5. Pop your vitamins. Think omega-3 fatty acids…so important for shiny hair.
  6. Try a homemade facial about mid-month. I used 2 tbs of honey, two egg yolks, and one SMALL drop of milk (think REALLY small…it needs to be thick). I left it on for 10 minutes, and It made my face super soft and really helped to shrink my pores even though I only used it once! Love it!
  7. Next, try a homemade hair mask. (I use two eggs, one capful of olive oil, and whisk thoroughly. I wrap with a shower cap, or plastic bag and elastic, and wrap with a towel. Leave in for 30 min-2 hours, and wash thoroughly).
  8. Try a self-tanner lotion about 7 days before, until you’ve reached your desired “tan.”
  9. Try a “hand spa.” Soak your hands in some warm water and a drop or two of your favorite essential oil for 5 minutes, then use an exfoliate cloth, or solution (like sugar and water) to scrub your hands. Finish with some hand lotion, or Vaseline, and wear some cotton gloves overnight. Makes your hands crazy soft.
  10. For 7 days before the big day, use a no-hot tools policy, where for seven days you spare your hair the iron. This ensures shiny, shiny hair. On the day of, blow dry your hair on highest heat to ensure the most shine. For me this meant buns, and updos!
  11. Do your eyebrows 10 days before.
  12. Try an under eye serum a few days before if you don’t already.
  13. On the big day: walk/run in the a.m. for at least 45 min to increase blood flow to your cheeks. Don’t forget your manicure and pedicure.

Do your hair and makeup a couple of hours before the event. Try sliding an ice-cube over your pores to shrink them right before makeup application, and don’t forget to moisturize before you apply your foundation. This is the one day I like to use a primer to really look pulled together.Double check your makeup application in the sunlight to ensure everything looks fine. Smile and knock em’ dead.

Do you have any beauty prep rituals?

Have you heard of Polyvore.com? It’s a great (and free) online networking space where you can build fashion boards, outfits, and so on. I used it to come up with outfit ideas for our family photo shoot. Sometime next week we’ll be getting our Christmas and Fall photos done by a friend who happens to be a professional photographer. She recommended I start planning for some coordinating outfits and gave me this blog article to look at.
I’m not too into matchy-matchy, but I thought it’d be fun to do some kind of planning. I tried to use similar looking items that we already have in our wardrobe. With the excpetion of a couple pieces I’d like to purchase, most of these are right on target with what we own, I just didn’t pay designer prices because I regualrily shop at TJMaxx, Target, Old Navy, and Landsend Canvas.
In honor of the 31 day challenge I’m undergoing: of no more procrastinating (the non-urgent, important things in life), here’s to long-term planning! And isn’t that a non-urgent, important task?  Click HERE for the beginning.
